Cardinal

Cardinal [car·di·nahl, *also var., car·did·nul] n. Stanford Cardinal, the nickname of University athletics teams. *usage note: as Cardinal refers to a color and not a bird or a clergyman, per an official declaration in 1981 by then President Donald Kennedy one does not add an S to make it plural. See Card. *note: In the 70s after removing the "Indian" as the University mascot due to the offensive nature of ethnic minority caricaturing, the University adopted something safe/neutral as the designator of its athletic teams, namely a shade of red.
