El Palo Alto

El Palo Alto [el·pal·oh·al·toe] n. the actual tree, a legendary California Redwood that was a prominent natural landmark on the original Stanford family farm lands and which became an emblem of the University created from those lands; in modernity, it's no longer situated at the "center" of the Stanford universe. The University grew and expanded in such a manner that the tree is now located in a (same named) park in the City of Palo Alto, CA ---which took its name from the tree. A representation of the tree is used on the official Stanford University Seal, as well as the City of Palo Alto Seal. It is the inspiration for the band mascot, known simply as The Tree. {the term is Spanish meaning "the tall tree"}
