HooTow

HooTow [hoo·touw] n. Hoover Tower, a tall tower or building that houses part of the Hoover Institution (a conservative public policy think tank).

NOTES: The building houses offices, etc. and provides a lofty view of campus. One can go up the tower as part of a tour. It is the Stanford campus equivalent of the proverbial Ivory Tower made real. A campus icon, the building often features prominently in aerial photos and University literature. A line in a popular University song that is a part of the repertoire of one of the Stanford acapella groups (Fleet Street) refers to the tower in a boast aimed at Cal (Stanford's arch rival) by intoning tongue-in-cheek, "Our phallic symbol is bigger than yours." Hoover Tower apparently, is taller than Cal Berkeley's (unknown) version of the Ivory Tower. There have been numerous unsanctioned pranks over the years that have involved dangling things or unfurling things, like banners, from Hoover Tower.
