The Tree [thee·tree] n. the University Marching Band's mascot, a position filled by a student chosen during an often grueling selection process run by the band, the selected applicant traditionally wears a self-made oversized and often cartoonish tree costume in homage to El Palo Alto, an official University symbol*. (As such, the look of The Tree changes along with the person undertaking the role.) *note: The University has no official mascot, only official symbols. The Tree is the band's mascot and was originally created as a spoof of mascots in general. See also: LSJUMB.
